I've ran in hoka Stinson atrs for the past two years (two marathons) after being in asics gel nimbus for 10'ish years. I was advised to try hokas (vs the gel nimbus) due to pretty awful sesamoiditis. The stinson 1 and 2 were terrific. The Stinson atr 3 (current version) is awful. I've been buying the Stinson atr version 1 and 2 but last February I couldn't find them anywhere any longer, so I gave the challenger a try. Over the past couple years I've tried on version 1 and 2 of the challenger, but they always felt super hard compared to the stinson...but all that changed with this current version (version 3). I can't believe how amazing these shoes are. From the moment I put them on I was in love. Same cushion and tough exterior as the Stinson but waaaaay lighter. Feels like I have two rockets on my feet compared to the Stinson. I'm about 300 miles into this pair and they still feel terrific. I'm about to buy a second pair and saw sadly no one has left a review about how heavenly these shoes are. If you are looking for an extremely cushioned, durable, light running shoe for trails and road, just stop reading reviews and get this shoe.

It took me a while to consider trying something other than the Asics Kayano, which I've worn for road and trail for 20 years. I wasn't sure how stability and cushioning could go together, but it does. I really like this shoe for trails. My primary use is fast paced hiking in mountainous terrain with a water bottle-no pack. This shoe is great for the modest running I do, sprinting on the trails occasionally, but serves as a stable, comfortable, lightweight, somewhat sticky soled hiker. I purchased another pair within 10 days, because I always rotate my shoes. Highly recommended.

Durability issues with this style. These were my 4th pair of Hokas, after some very long lasting Stinson Tarmacs and Bondi 2s and while I liked them, I didn't love them. I noticed very quickly that the area on the shoe where the big toe meets the foot began to fray. This was odd because there's no contact between the foot and the shoe there however fray it did until one day I poked a hole right through them. Hokas are still my go to running shoe however I'm cautious and I won't be going with the Challenger again.

Heels kept slipping out every step. Need support like in the previous version, ATR 2.

Zappos sent a used pair of shoes. They were worn on the soles and the uppers were filthy and stained. They were really disgusting and should never have been shipped out to fulfill an order. I was inconvenienced because I did not have the shoes when I needed them and I had to take time to return the shoes. I feel like Zappos should have done something to compensate me for the inconvenience. I plan to look for another company to purchase my next pair of shoes.

This is the third pair of these that I have purchased for my husband. He is a runner with significant heel issues and these are the only shoes that work for him. Excellent support!!!

I absolutely love them. I require a very neutral shoe. Even the moderate cushioning is too much for me. The challenger provides me the comfort and support I need whether I'm running on the trail, or running on the road. I'm about 75 miles in so far and I am nothing but stoked. I'm looking forward to the next version. Definitely my favorite pair of Hoka's that I've owned so far.

I have 3 pairs of Hoka athletic shoes and a pair of laced sandals. All are solid products, correct fit (I'm 11.5 men's) and the workmanship is excellent, virtually zero cosmetic flaws as well. This pair seems to be the lightest pair of the shoes I own and yet the cushioning is exceptional, while being a very stable shoe. I'm not a trail runner, but rather 2 of my cleated models I use as golf shoes. They have excellent traction, are very light, and are easy to clean post-round. And, they can be thrown in the washer when they get a little "too dirty". Also, the cleating is not too dramatic so that I can wear this model as a street shoe and avoid changing shoes when leaving the course. Note: I became aware of the Hoka brand on a trip to Maui and noted a number of waiters and waitresses were wearing Hokas. I asked a couple individuals "why", and their comments were in effect, "the best shoe if you are on your feel all day." A good endorsement, and so I tried them. Cheers, Rick Eastes

By far my favorite trail shoe. I keep coming back to it and have had numerous pairs since they came out with the Challenger ATR series. Good cushion yet still firm and not too tall. It's my go to shoe for any ultra and most of my training!

Love the shoes, I find them to be lightweight rugged on the sole and well-constructed could not be happier!

I owned the previous incarnation and loved it as well. the ATR3 is better in every way. The fit is more refined; the upper more durable. The platform is nice and wide and the tread is all I need for running on packed dirt and mud here in LA. The shoe is light and breathes well. It definitely runs a half size small. I wear a 10.5 in the Clifton and have to go to an 11 on the ATR. Might be due to the added protection on the toe box. I've tried all of the trail shoes: salomons, northface, inov-8, montrail, nike, brooks. None offer the cushion of the hokas. They have allowed me to run without ankle pain from a previous injury.

Use it for work. I walk 5-6 miles per day carrying weight over different terrain.

I recently signed up for a 10K and after traveling 1.5 hrs. to get there, I realized I had forgotten my running shoes! Too late to go back home to get them but luckily my son had a spare pair of Hoka's with him and let me borrow them for the race. Hoka's? I had never heard of them. Well, I ran a PR and ordered my own pair of Hoka's as soon as the race ended. I didn't even wait until I got home! These fit and felt so much better than my regular running shoes which shall remain nameless (they have a swooosh on the side). They are lightweight and it was like running on cushions. I have high arches and usually my arches are a bit sore after running but not with these. They support my arches great! I do trail runs occasionally and the tread on these is aggressive! I can't think of any other word to describe it better. They're very sure footed and stable off road. They really grip! These are the best running shoes I've ever had. I'll never wear anything but Hoka's now! I'm 6' 0", 180lbs. and I typically run 35-45 miles a week.

I use these for work, I'm on my feet all day long and these shoes are perfect for that. I also walk around New York City from job to job and they are great walking shoes.

This shoe is great! I love the ride I get and enjoy the cushion/weight ratio. This is a great shoe whether your doing easy miles, tempo work on the trails or racing a 1/2 marathon+ in distance. I highly recommend this shoe.

I love the Challenger ATRs, especially after their toe boxes were made a bit wider (version 3). In them, I bested my 50k PR twice this year! Not worrying about my feet or traction certainly helped. I'm a big fan of the cushion and the slightly stretchy laces too. One quick question: The laces in my latest pair of Challengers are a fair bit longer than previous pairs. I'd prefer not to deal with the extra lace, tucking it into the lower laces to prevent a trip hazard. Just my two cents. Thanks for these great shoes!
