Ruffwear

Ruffwear Logo
Ruff Wear. In the summer of 1992, while mountain biking in the Los Padres National Forest with friends and their dog, Ruff Wear founder and president Patrick Kruse met with a challenge that sparked a series of innovations in gear for dogs on the go.

While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.

Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.

In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.

Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.

"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."

"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

I am an absolute fan of Ruffwear and the Martingale collar is terrific. I like that the length is adjustable. All the materials used are high quality. The chain is smooth and thick without making too much jingling noise while just hanging lose around the dog’s neck. Can definitely recommend and would buy again.

I really like Ruffwear and this lead is no exception. We use it for running and biking. It’s easy to adjust, nice hardware, and the purple dusk color is beautiful. The color really pops. Would definitely buy again and recommend.

Great sweater: The fleece is beautiful and super soft (with a not noise material), just what I was looking for in a dog's sweater for indoor use mostly. Expect bright colors. My disappointment was with the too bright color. So I try to exchange for the Climate Changer Fleece Jacket in Gray but the material wasn't as nice as Fernie and the green details just a poor choice of color. I was sad about the Fernie and was hard to let it go, but didn't work out.

We love this harness. We have always walked our dog on a collar but we wanted to try a harness. We decided on this harness since its more cushioned than just a strap one at the local pet store. This one is very adjustable and seems well built. Been using it for over a year daily and it has held up great. When it get muddy we just put it in the washer and hang it to dry. Our dog loves walking on it. Its very easy to put on, just slip over their neck and then buckle the 2 clips. The clips are designed so that theres extra fabric so you cant pinch your dog. Its a great harness we are considering another color so we can rotate. When you get it if it seems small make sure you expand all the straps. We bought the L/XL and were worried it wouldn't fit our 85lb dog. However after we expanded the straps if fit with plenty of room.

Nice, basic sock. It is a little thinner than I had originally thought, but my dog seems super comfortable wearing these with her booties. They provide good protection for her dew claws too.

I purchased this for my 35 lb. 20 month old doodle. I purchased a green fernie in a size medium. It is a little large but hoping she will grow into it. I love the color and it looks very stylish on her. With our warm weather in the Carolina’s this winter she has not made much use of it. Hoping for some colder weather soon. It's a little tricky to get on at first. I would suggest to zipper it a little before putting it on Especially if you have an impatient dog. As one previous review had stated, would prefer the leg holes to be spaced a little further apart. That being said is why I only gave it a 4 rating.

Getting a harness with a handle was ideal to be able to guide our 12 year old dog up a ramp to the back of our SUV and to prevent him from falling off it. Comfort would be 5 stars with the core cooler added. Immediately after receiving it we purchased the core cooler to add more cushion/stability. I can't image using this harness for lifting without the cooler or brush guard added. Without it, the bottom of this harness is just thin straps. SINCE THERE IS SO LITTLE MATERIAL ON THE BOTTOM, I THINK ADDING THE CORE COOLER/BRUSH GUARD IS 100% NECESSARY IF YOU WANT/NEED ANY LIFTING SUPPORT. I wish the harness came with it instead of having to buy separately for $25. It is more difficult to put on a large dog compared to the other ruffwear Front Range harness since it involves the dog having to lift his front right leg to put though the front strap. It takes longer for us to put this on since our dog is just not use to doing this. Plus his long neck makes it difficult. For this reason we only use this harness for suv rides and still use and love the Front Range harness for regular walks. We bought the l/xl for our 85lb Golden.

Just incase the description is unclear this is not a harness it is an attachment to the ruffwear webmaster harness. After I purchased the Ruffwear Webmaster Harness, I Bought this Core Cooler accessory. It attaches to the harness by Velcro. It adds stability and cushion support to the underside of the harness. I did not buy it for the cooling feature. I bought it to add support to the harness. I would NOT use that harness for lifting/assisting a dog with mobility issues without this piece added to it. Without it the bottom of the harness is just 2 thin straps that would be very uncomfortable. This connects the straps making it 1 large piece like a cradle. We bought the xl cooler to attach to our xl ruffwear webmaster harness (sold separately) and it fit great on our 85lb dog. Besides this core cooling piece they also sell a brush guard that velcos on instead. I have not tried it but it is similar to this piece.

The material and sewing quality are very good on this product. The seams are finished cleanly, but it would be nicer if the inside seams were taped so the shed hair doesn't stick in the threads. The zipper works smoothly, but it seems like it zips in the wrong direction, since the pull coverlet is on the start (collar) end instead of the finish end (tail) which makes it a bit difficult to insert the zipper end into the closer and thus gives no protection to the zipper pull when zipped. All in all, a good product.

First of all, the rain coat that we received from Zappos did not come with the original manufacture tags. It makes you wonder if they are re-selling USED items on this website. Maybe it was a customer return, but for Pete's sake slap on those tags so people think it's NEW. I did call customer service, they apologized but nothing else. I complain at In-n-out and they go the extra mile to make it right, I even get a Christmas Card from them each year. Take note Zappos! Now, for the actual item: So you know, it is super thin material and has no lining. I hope it holds up well (i.e., repels water on the outside and does not soak into their coats like those cheap products that are sold at big-box pet stores) in actual rain. I will keep my fingers cross. The way the rain coat is designed it leaves a big area of the underside (chest, tummy, and practically the entire legs) exposed to the elements and potential silt from the ground. This is not a good thing especially if you have long-haired doggies like me, Ugh! But we will see what happens when it actually rains again in Southern California.

Bought this puffy in medium for our 6 year old female Doberman. Have had previous difficulties finding outerwear that fits our dog's wide chest and narrow waist. This Ruffwear puffy fits her perfectly through the belly without sagging and the stretchy panel reduces underarm chafe on the run. Adding an offset zipper eliminates the anxiety of pulling something over our dog's head. The color (larkspur purple) is cute without being pink. Our dog really seems to be comfortable in this vest!

Bought this in XXS along with the Fergie and Powder Hound for our rescue chihuahua. Though they could be a tad smaller, they still fit well enough to keep them all. I've found that other XXS apparel items from the manufacturer that don't have this type of underside are too large and have larger-dog sized hardware. The Blue Moon color is a little darker than the pic. Very tasteful!
