Altra Footwear

Altra Footwear Logo
Altra™ wasn't started in some corporate office, but in the back room of a Wasatch Mountain running store. The founders —elite athletes and retail managers— wanted a running shoe that encouraged running the way you were born to run. They noticed that the design of most athletic shoes hurt runners more than they helped. The elevated heel of the typical running shoe being sold promoted high-impact landings, and their narrow toe box design squeezed the toes out of their natural splayed position.

What began as experimental shoe alterations grew into what we know to be the Altra running company of today. Innovative from the get go, the brand is the only running footwear company to feature the cushioned Zero Drop™ platform and FootShape™ toe box technologies, which can be found integrated into every style across their entire footwear line. This combination of proprietary components encourages low-impact technique, and allows the feet and toes to remain in a natural, more relaxed position. The brand’s unique approach to creating running shoes has earned them multiple awards and a faithful fan following throughout the years.

From road to trail running, natural to maximum cushioning, Altra running shoes will change your perspective on what running comfort and performance can be.

Great sneakers for a great price. I searched months for a comfortable shoe that isn’t small in the toe bed area. I have plantar fasciitis and have a hard time finding good shoes. They’re not wide but fit like wide shoes. Highly recommend! Wish they came in more colors.

these shoes do not have enough cushion for my purposes. I expect I would have liked them very much when I was younger, as I was a big fan of earth shoes. At this point in my life I need more cushioning.

I have worn this shoe in the past and it is the most comfortable shoe I’ve owned. I have plantar faciaitis and bunions and I work a 12 hour shift pounding concrete. No other shoe compares. Altra is apparently having difficulty producing this shoe for some reason, but Zappos had it thank God

Perfect for comfort with a stress fracture of the sesamoid bone. Roomy enough to fit an orthotic to help with comfort and healing and I love the zero gravity feel as it takes pressure off of the ball of the foot. I will continue with these shoes long after the bones have healed. Love them!

I am relatively new to the Altra brand. I have the Escalante shoe and love it, but I was looking for something with a little more stability & support for the gym without losing the cushioning of the Escalante. This shoe worked perfectly! Very happy with this purchase. It did take a day or two to break it in, but now it’s a very comfy shoe to wear during aerobics class or general gym workouts.

Big fan of Altra Footwear and this style doesn't disappoint. Tried the blue (nice color, won't interfere with denim, chinos etc) sole is soft gray, doesn't scream. After reading other reviews I tried 10.5 then 10. Am standard size 9, widest part of feet is 4.5. Toe box in these shoes is endless both in length and width. Whole shoe seemed wide, stable and flexible. Style is good for all day and given the comfort level of these, worth wearing all day, too. Is really great with Altras to wear shoes that don't feel like heels but had to toss the 2 sizes back: ran out of time to reorder for an event and I decided that the sole wasn't as cushy as I'd like. But! I am shopping again for more Altras here at Zappos- only place I go. Thanks

I discovered Altras about a year ago through the recommendation of my foot surgeon. I need a large toe box. I wear them with custom orthotics (mostly extra cushioning). They are wonderful- my feet never get tired and they are more comfortable than any other shoe I have tried. The reason I got a pair of Lone Peak 4’s was for a surer grip on trails and hopefully for balance. I haven’t been on real trails yet but they are great on uneven sidewalks. I don’t know how well the treads will hold up since I’ve only had them a few weeks.

If you have Morton's Neuroma from running, these shoes are fabulous. Once adapted to zero drop shoes, these are truly great shoes with a wide, natural toe box. Would give six stars if possible.

I bought these for an upcoming trip to London, Prague and Ireland where I will be doing a lot of walking and wanted something that would look classy but not necessarily like "trainers" or "tennis" shoes. I have the grey and fuschia. They look really nice and I am still breaking them in -- which is not really necessary -- but I wanted to make sure they were going to work for walks in the "wild." This is my second pair of Altra and the toe box on these does not look quite as obvious as the toe box on my first pair. I normally take a size 8; however, the website recommended an 8.5 which I did order. They fit well. Thanks for recommending I go up a half size. My first pair was a true size 8.

These shoes looked great and actually fit. They were comfy too, up to a point. The point is that they were too soft, marshmallowy I call it. I need hard shoes, like hiking boots. Anything that compresses causes multiple problems for me with calf muscles and metatarsals. Result: my feet were sore for at least a week after wearing these shoes for 2 days.

The shoes felt okay. Not amazing or great. The arch support was minimal. It would be great if Already made a disease 11.5 for women. The 12s are too large and the 11s are too short. The men's like is also too wide for my B width feet.

Wonderful shoe for my very difficult feet. Wide toe supports bunions and healthy toe/forefoot movement, relaxing all pressure on sensitive places. Nice snug heel and true-to-size mid foot for women's foot. Comfortable padding. I'm not a runner, but older woman with significant foot problems, and I'm delighted to have found this shoe.

I've worn altras for many years and assumed these would be the same story. How wrong I was. As stated in many reviews, the seams on the mid foot are abrasive, however I was able to kind of forget about them as I went through my workout. Worse than the seams was the tight fit of the midfoot. What is the point of having a larger toe box if the bones in the middle of your foot are so bundled together that toe splay is an afterthought?? By the end of my workout, both feet had cramps and I am certain these shoes affected my running gait, even though I focused on maintaining form. Huge fail Altra!!! Throw this shoe in the garbage.

this is the same size and shoe i have ordered before but i was sent a WIDE shoe instead of normel width and if you place my old shoe and the shoes sent sent by zappos side by side, the new shoe was a quarter inch longer although marked the same size. Therefore the manufacturers need better quality control and zappos employees need to pay more attention to the order and not send a wide shoe when normal width was indicated. it is a HUGE INCONVENIENCE to return items when during my work day and when trying to take care of a family.

I really wanted to like these, however the cut of the shoe made it to where my outer toes constantly bumped the front of the shoe. Unfortunately, I tried multiple sizes and while the size 11 eliminated the toe bumping, I may have been able to walk on water with them they felt so big. Way too much slop in the shoe for anything technical for myself. Major bummer because my Lone Peak 4's are fantastic and fit true to size.

It was nice to find a shoe with enough depth and room for my feet. Style and color are really nice too. Unfortunately I need solid shoes, that do not have foamy or marshmallowy type of cushion. Need a trail running shoe that is almost as solid as a light hiking shoe or I end up with foot problems. Wore these shoes once for a long walk. Feet were sore for several days. Real disappointed.

My son loves these shoes. He has a hard time finding shoes that aren't tight/narrow in the toes and he thinks these are great. They aren't super heavy duty, but they aren't falling apart easily, either. Lightweight and easy to put on.

Once I figured out what it was and how to use it, I liked the little strap that allows the boot to be tightened well over the instep. Before that I couldn't figure out why my foot wouldn't go into the boot! A change that would improve the boot greatly is hooks rather than leather tunnels for lacing--especially above the "little strap". I hate struggling to re-lace my shoes--yet with boots, the it's vital to be able to re-lace easily when going downhill.

Size 7 was at once too short and too wide. Tried 7.5--again, too short but extremely wide. Didn't want to try size 8 since except for length I was already swimming in size 7.5. Too bad--from the description the boot was perfect.

I usually wear size 9 in sneakers so I ordered the 9s and they fit perfectly. I also have the Escalante but was thinking the Torin might have more cushion which it did. The problem was that they rub my bunion and cause pain while the Escalante does not. Sent the Torins back and will stick with the Escalante.

These shoes feel like you’re walking on a cloud! So comfortable. Lots of support. They have a wide toe box and narrow heel great for running. I am usually and 8.5-9. The 9 was way too big and the 8.5 felt almost too big as well. Could have maybe gone with an 8, but keep the 8.5 as the little extra room I had in them want bothersome and is better for longer runs. Overall great shoe!
