I bought 1123's forever. Then, when I heard that they were about to be retired...I bought 6 pairs of 1123's from all over the US at 4 different shoes companies. I walk 5 miles per day and although this shoe was, by far and away, the best shoe I ever bought, they only lasted between 3-4 months as my walk was on the streets of Pasadena, Ca. and the bottoms just flat out wore away. Then, as a replacement, they offered the 1540v2. And, the shoe was and is exceptional as well, having the same range factor before the bottoms were street sanded smooth. The big problem is the difference in price as the 1123's were closer to $100 during sales. What is perplexing and I even wrote the company a few times about this issue; why retire a well made and highly sought after shoe in the 1123? Unfortunately, the response was very businesslike and straightforward; "the 1540v2 is superior due to it's rollbar technology" etc. etc. etc. Why not just make the 1123 and the 1540v2 and let the customer pick? Because of price conflict. In any event, the 1540v2 is a wonderful shoe and is a fine replacement to the 1123. Again, it was and is only the price that concerned me, yet what can I do? The truth is...the New Balance 1540v2 is superior to any other company and shoe on the market today, imo. And, if I were not such a walking fool...they would last alot longer sans a healthy heart.
I'd also recommend:
There is nothing to compare out there to the 1123 or 1540v2. Sell both.

My husband has very tender feet and is a severe overpronator. He also has plantar fasciitis. These are the only shoes he wears for exercise. He likes to wear them all day, but I won't go out to dinner with him unless he changes to another shoe!

I had been wearing NB1123s for years and when they finally started falling apart I began looking to replace them. Only to find that they did not exist anymore. The NB1540V2 replaced them. Reviews said that these shoes ran small compared to the 1123 so I figured I was going to need to try them on before ordering. Not able to find any store in my area that carried them I resorted to Zappos. I ordered what I believed was the correct size but when I received them I found that the toes on my left foot were to uncomfortably closed to the tip of the shoe. I contacted Zappos and they said no problem and sent out, that day, the next size up and asked me to return the incorrect shoes after I had received the new shipment. They even provided a return label. This is my first time with Zappos and I could not be happier. The replacement pair of shoes fit fine and I am back to walking every other day. My advice is to try Zappos. They are great.

Very comfy walking shoe, but had to return my pair because the foam insole kept "balling up" in the toe area. Too bad NB could not engineer a better insole for this premium walking/running shoe.

The entire shoe is oversized. This might be a good shoe for someone who has feet that swell.

These shoes I have worn for the past six months great shoes comfy I would only want more shock absorption. In them is all I'd ask for I'm 330 lbs so that's important to knees and feet.

This is my second pair, I owned an the 1520 v1 for over four years and are still in good condition. The new model is a little different, more synthetic overlays and a grey insole instead of the black on the older version. Very durable shoe, with maximum stability, however that extra stability comes with added weight on the shoe which is something to consider

I bought these for my husband, he is struggling with plantar fascitis. They were recommended by his doctor. They aren't exactly stunning to look at, but the support is really good, particularly for anyone who pronates. My husband says they haven't completely fixed his issue, but they've made it possible for him to walk for a bit anyway.

Best things I walk in, bar none. This is my 3rd pair - I bought 2 pair 4 years ago, and they wore like iron. I wear an orthotic because my feet are as flat as pancakes, and this shoe allows it to fit perfectly. Will be ordering another pair in white this week...

This shoe is curing my plantar fasciitis!I wear orthotics in other shoes but was still suffering foot pain.Reading several reviews by people saying it cured their plantar fasciitis,I was skeptical.I bought them and wore them for 5 days straight.Pain was lessening. When I removed the very cheap insole and replaced with my Protalus orthotics I couldn’t believe how the shoe and orthotics worked together. In 2 days my pain just about went away! This shoe is amazing for me.I overpronate and have a narrow foot. They offer widths from narrow to extra wide.I have since been selling off my other running shoes.I will only wear these shoes with my orthotics to keep away my foot pain.Wish I found these years ago.

Great Product and usual Great Service from Zappo's. Silver/Blue sneakers are attractively sporty, light weight, supportive (roll bars this model) and very comfortable. Would recommend to anyone looking for a stylish sneaker that draws compliments on the streets.

Best overall shoe for my husbands planter fasciitis. He wears a 4E and these for him perfectly. He wears orthotics with them as well. He has had probably 4 pair of these in the last few years.

Love these sneakers and try to keep an extra pair on hand just in case. They're great because they're dark all over and easier to wear at work without drawing attention. Durable, great arch support and they accomodat my orthopedic insole. Hard to find so grab them when you see them.

Excellent shoes. Purchased the inserts to go with them at the new balance store for an extra $50 and boy was it worth it! Took me a while to get use to walking correctly but after a week or so my feet feel amazing. I'm sold on new balance.

These shoes were for my mom, who has terrible plantar fasciitis like I do. I finally convinced her to try the New Balance 1540 v2s like I have as they are so supportive. But, she really wanted an all black shoe, so we purchased the men's style. That way she can wear them with black pants and look ok. The wide width allows her custom orthotic to fit well, and she has noticed an improvement in her knees and back as well from the supportive shoe. These shoes don't win any beauty contests, but they are really amazing for folks who need the support.

I was a little worried that the widest size is only a 4E. Generally I require a 5-6E so that my toes aren't crowded but in these I have plenty of room, have great support and am very comfortable.

Great supportive shoe! I wish they would offer it in a few more colors. I was glad to see blue finally available which ups my collections of 1540s to 3 (They only offer them in 3 different colors) I understand its a more expensive shoes but when you have foot issues and you find a shoe that is comfortable its nice to have multiple colors to wear.

Very sturdy, supportive shoe. I have worn this pair or a similar NB model for years. It is my go-to shoe and well worth the expense. Highly recommend for anyone with a wider foot and/or a larger frame. Works well for short runs and marathons.

Recommended by my Podiatrist, bought them and they are definitely comfortable! I removed the insoles and placed my orthotics inside. The leather outside continues to look new. The color is black and my size is 14 4E.

I was very disappointed when NB discontinued the 1123, but these 1540 might fill the void. Last night I went to the local blues show, danced, and the support and comfort were there! So far so good.

My husband has plantar fasciitis and this is the only shoe he will wear. They accommodate his custom orthotics very well.
